On March 20, 2025, the NWU Educational Resource Center’s (NWUERC) first floor transformed into a hub of insightful discussion among political science students enrolled in Government and Politics in Southeast Asia. They gathered for a book reading activity titled, “Reading Between the Lines: Politics and Fables." The event centered on reading and analyzing the book “Paano Natalo ng Baryo ang Halimaw” (How Did the Village Defeat the Monster), a compelling story that weaves political themes into a fable written by Paola Espiritu. The activity was graced by NWUERC Assistant Director Nora Clemente and Director Lucena Felipe. Before the event proper, Dr. Karl Lenin Benigno, NWU Vice President for Administration and Professor of the subject, Government and Politics in Southeast Asia, delivered his welcome remarks. Also, Director Felipe gave her discerning commentary and affirmed the relevance of the book as an instructional material for the subject. The author elucidated the interesting background on how she was able to conceptualize and write the book. Students actively participated in analyzing the book’s deeper meanings, drawing parallels between the fable’s narrative and real-world political scenarios in Southeast Asia. The discussion highlighted the power of collective action, leadership, and civic responsibility—key themes that resonate in both literature and governance. The event successfully fostered a deeper understanding of politics through storytelling, reinforcing the significance of fables as a tool for critical reflection and engagement. The activity was a collaboration of the Government and Politics in Southeast Asia Class, NWUERC, and Social Science Department of the College of Arts and Sciences.
